We are a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization started to promote organ donation awareness to help our community better understand the great impact organ donation has on the lives of kidney patients and their loved ones.
Organ donation is giving an organ to help someone who needs a transplant. Kidneys, heart, liver, lungs, pancreas and the small bowel can all be transplanted.
Transplants are one of the biggest achievements of modern medicine and can save or greatly enhance the lives of other people. However, they depend completely on donors and their families consenting to organ or tissue donation. One donor can save the life of several people, restore the sight of two others and improve the quality of life of many more.
Every year hundreds of people die while waiting for an organ transplant or before they even get on to the transplant list. There is a serious shortage of organs and the gap between the number of organs donated and the number of people waiting for a transplant is increasing. The shortage of organs has led to an increasing number of organ donations by living people, usually a kidney
I come from a family history of high blood pressure and diabetes. High blood pressure and diabetes are the leading causes of kidney failure. High blood pressure is what led to my diagnosis of End-Stage Renal Disease. My symptoms were subtle. I had fluid retention in my hands and feet causing them to swell. They found protein in my urine, which can be a sign of kidney disease and serum creatinine shot up. They then ran a battery of tests, including a biopsy, and determined that I had irreversible FSGS. This meant that I will be needing a transplant in near future. When my elder sister learnt about my condition she told me that she will get tested and will do whatever it takes to make me well. My young sister who is a doctor by profession also offered to donate her kidney in case my elder sister is found to be incompatible. Finally, the transplant was carried out successfully with my elder sister being the donor. It’s been couple of years now and both me and my sister are feeling great.
Before the transplant I had to undergo dialysis for couple of months and during that time I have seen so many patients lining up for dialysis everyday, from children to elderly people and some of them have been surviving on dialysis for more than 20-25 years. While speaking to them I got to know that inspite of having potential donors from the family they could not go for transplant as nobody was ready to donate their kidney due to various myths. I was shocked to hear this and spoke to my sisters about starting a foundation to promote living Organ donation awareness after my transplant. My sisters were also thinking in similar lines and that is how we got started with “Jiban Rekha Vrddhi Foundation” which means “Life Line Enhancement” leading to a better quality of life.
My sister is my Hero. Be like my sister and become someone’s hero.
I am a living kidney donor. My sojourn into becoming a kidney donor started with my younger brother being diagnosed as having end stage renal disease known as ESRD. The very news of my beloved brother being diagnosed as such was a great shock to us all. We were utterly shattered by the news that his condition was irreversible and ultimately he would have to go for kidney transplant.
I immediately volunteered to donate one of my kidneys so that he can live a normal life. I also mentally prepared myself for the series of tests that I would have to undergo as a kidney donor. During the course of counselling, I got to know about the different forms and documents required for kidney transplantation. I went about systematically and within a few days got ready all the required forms and documents. As I belong to a state which is different from the state my brother is settled in, I had to attend two rounds of interviews held by the State Level Authorization Committee for OrganĀ Transplant of both the states.
During the course of getting the documents ready for kidney transplant, I met several people who needed kidney transplantation but was at a loss regarding the process and documents required for the procedure. I had helped quite a few by guidingĀ them on the forms and documents required and during this time I realised that there were a lot of misconception regarding living organ donation among the general public.
This realisation planted the seed of starting a foundation to help generate awareness amongst the general public regarding living organ donation and also work as a facilitator in this line. My siblings also had the same idea and with the blessings of our mother, we have forayed into raising a foundation to work in the field of living organ donation.
I am a doctor by profession practicing medicine and cardiology in Tezpur Institute Of Medical Sciences, Tezpur, Assam.
Around 70% of my patients are hypertensive and 60% are diabetics which are the main reason for chronic kidney disease. Around 40-60% of patients with hypertension and diabetes suffer from chronic renal disease which ultimately leads to end stage renal failure. In the present scenario, these patients are put on dialysis and advised for renal transplantation. But here arises the problem of finance, availability of organ and legal procedures and above all the mental acceptability of the patient and donor as well as the family.
As I have experienced such a situation in my family, I would like to actively spread awareness amongst the people regarding organ donation and provide logistic support to the needy.
To become a positive collaborative force in bringing kidney disease awareness, education and prevention resources to a community disproportionately hit by this devastating disease. Our aim is to assist the poor people suffering from kidney ailments to access medical care.
To improve the health and well-being of people at risk or affected by kidney disease, through education, prevention and support, and increasing organ donation and transplantation.
To foster, promote and develop all aspects of organ donation and establish sustainable mechanisms of increasing community awareness about the importance of organ donation in the Community. This will serve to enhance the lives of those in need of organ donations and their families.
